Building The Foundation To Grow Exponentially With Your Business

May 11, 2023

Everyone wants to grow their business, they want to make more money, and have more customers. There’s nothing wrong with that. That being said, growing just for the sake of growth is not something I recommend. If you want to grow you need to have a plan. You need to have the steps lined up, so that you don’t get too big too fast. Before you can even think about growing you must ensure that you have a solid foundation. When you lay the foundation, you will have sustainable growth. Without that your growth could be quick and temporary.

Back in 2004 the tallest skyscraper in the world was built in Dubai. The name of the skyscraper is the Burj Khalifa. Several years ago my oldest brother, Doug took a trip to see the Burj Khalifa. Doug is an architect nut, he can tell you just about anything and everything you’d want to know about architecture. He took a trip to Dubai so that he could see the beauty and structural integrity of the Burj Khalifa for himself. It took construction crews 1,325 days to build the tallest free-standing structure in the world. Of those 1,325 days, two years were put into laying the groundwork for this building. Two years! Without a solid foundation, they would not have been able to build the tallest building in the world. You should treat your business the same way.

Your business should have a solid foundation to support your future growth. You may be thinking “I’m not that big of a company, so I can let things slide.” Even if you’re a small company now, who knows what could happen in the future. Not to mention the size of your company should not impact the legitimacy of it. It’s always a good idea to make sure you have all your bases covered. Do you know for a fact you are filing taxes correctly, or could it come back to bite you in a few years? Don’t keep sweeping things under the rug because you are too busy mowing lawns. The backend operations are important too! That’s what supports you and enables you to have a healthy sustainable business for the long term.

It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers, that’s what bookkeepers, payroll companies, and CPAs are for. You need to put in the effort to make sure you have those people or resources in place when the time comes. Some states require you to collect sales tax on mowing, some of you might 1099 your guys when they should really be employees. These are important aspects that lay the foundation for your business. Now is not the time to skip steps or take shortcuts. If they had taken shortcuts when building the Burj Khalifa, the building would have crumbled.

There are so many resources, programs, mentors, and courses out there, so it’s okay if you don’t have all the answers, but make an effort to firm up the foundation of your business. Educate yourself on what goes into starting a lawn care business, take a look at our course page if you’re not sure where to start. Bottom line is, if you want sustainable growth you can’t neglect the small stuff.
